Talented, well-educated, multidisciplinary specialists are much needed in both R&D and technology sectors. The university has important role to prepare and educate young talented students and make them ready for the career in Academia or DeepTech industry.

Institute of Bioengineering provides educational programs in life and exact sciences on every level: Bachelor’s, Master’s, Doctoral.

Good education should incorporate the latest trends and achievements of both R&D and Technology and take into account industry input. So, students will receive knowledge and skills that correspond to the demand of the modern world.

Institute of Bioengineering provides good study opportunities for students from Estonia and around the world. We launched and coordinate Science & Technology Bachelor’s program and the Bioengineering master’s program. Study programs are international, English-taught, focus on development of practical skills, and allow choosing the courses to fit student’s career goals.

We are emphasizing the importance of practical studies having a plenty of them in our curricula, since it is the most effective way to develop skills and knowledge. Also, an important part of teaching process is creation of encouraging study environment. So, the students have the feeling of belonging, emotionally supported and are part of our study community.

After Graduation our alumni are wanted in academia and job market all over the world. They continue their career in top universities or DeepTech enterprises. Sometimes they continue in different field, as solid foundational knowledge and skills can be transferred to other professions.

The Science and Technology (S&T) bachelor program is coordinated by Institute of Bioengineering and is a collaboration of 4 institutes: Institute of Bioengineering (coordinator), Institute of Technology, Institute of Chemistry, and Institute of Molecular and Cell Biology.

One of the goals of this international English taught program is to attract talented students from around the world, who are interested in life and exact sciences and have an interdisciplinary mindset.

The program has 3 specializations:

Bioengineering & Robotics (B&R)
Chemistry & Materials Science (C&M)
Genetics & Biotechnology (G&B)

First 1,5 years students’ study all together to get basic knowledge in the fields of Math, Chemistry, Physics, Programming, Molecular Biology etc. to equalize the different background of student, get foundation and to prepare for further studies. Additionally, students are getting practical experience in the specialization fields that allows them to better understand what one or another specialization is about, because before entering the university the majority has abstract imagination about specializations. It is hard to choose before you try it. Additionally, after practical experience students better understand what they like to do and what opportunities they have in one or another specialization. So, after 1,5 years students make a knowledgeable decision about main specialization. Next 1, 5 year they study separately according to the choice.

This type of structure of curriculum provides several advantages. It helps students to make better career decisions, provides with solid foundation in various fields and as students study altogether during the 1^st 3 semesters, and later spread between different specialisations, it promotes formation of community of future multi- and interdisciplinary professionals, that supports innovation across different fields.

Importantly, S&T students have a unique opportunity to join the only Estonian team and take part in the largest synthetic biology competition in the world – iGEM. Learn more about iGEM.

Then after 1.5 years, students make a knowledgeable decision about the main specialization and begin to study more specific courses in smaller groups.

Master’s program: Bioengineering

The master’s program in bioengineering is an interdisciplinary curriculum which combines different fields of applied biotechnology, synthetic biology, engineering, and information technology.

It is the logical continuation of S&T bachelor program and was launched in 2018 so the first S&T graduates could continue their studies. Besides S&T graduates, candidates who interested in bioengineering with bachelor’s degree or equivalent qualification in the natural and exact sciences or in the field of medicine are welcome to the program.

There are only 4 compulsory subjects in the program, additionally there is specialisation module with option to choose and professional practice module. So, students can design their studies according to their interest, focus of master’s thesis and career goals.

The practical studies are emphasized in the curriculum and comes in different forms. It has a number of practical courses, including practical’s in collaboration with enterprises and other universities, and also internship possibilities in Estonia and abroad. This expands students’ knowledge, experience and skills and better prepare to the job market.

Bioengineering program graduates has the possibility to continue their studies on PhD level or enter the job market. PhD studies can be done in academia or in collaboration with enterprises.
